Poker strategy is nothing but the sequence of steps that a player employs to work out on a particular pocket card that is dealt in any poker game.  Poker strategy is not just a single entity. A strategy is developed considering many factors apart from the basic rules of the games.

Poker strategy is based on the following factors:

  • The starting hands.
  • The table image
  • The nature of the players at the board.
  • The poker tells.
  • The betting structure.

The starting hands play an important role in any poker strategy because the first ever decision that any poker player will have to make is to decide whether to play a particular hand or not.  Unless the starting hand is good, no informed player who knows the correct hand that is payable would play.  Good players normally decide to either play or not based on how the starting hand turns up. The degree of poker strategy based playability of starting hands varies:-

  • Nut hands are played through the showdown.
  • Strong starting hands are played through the flop and are carefully decided in the turn and the river based on the strength of the opponent or based on expert capability to bluff out a better player than they.
  • Medium hands are waited to improve in the flop and if they do not improve they are folded.
  • Crap hands are folded without any further thought.

Poker strategy per table image should also be closely considered:-

  • Some hands are playable in the dealer position only, they are not recommended to be played in middle or too early position.
  • Table image has lots to do with how much should be called, raised or re-raised.
  • Some hands are played from the late position while the same hand is supposed to be folded in the early position.

Poker strategy per player nature should be considered very seriously:-

  • When a tight player bets, he is doing it with reason, he can possibly hold something good, but if he is a tight player and also a bluffer, you should use lot of odds to judge his motive.
  • Loose players can be confusing, when we think they are good they are bad, when we think they are bad they are good.  They are not best players but are confusing players.

Betting structure has the most to do with any poker strategy and the financial responsibility of any player. Play within bank rolls!
