When you are playing five card stud poker or seven card stud poker you need to remember the common overstatement unique to poker “It might never pay if you call.”  Commonly you are taught to raise if you have a chance and to fold if you do not have a chance and you are warned from calling, but this is really one of the worse ideas you can ever come across. There are definitely some situations where you are supposed to call.

There are definitely some situations where you are supposed to call.

However, when it comes to calling you need to be sure of the situations in which you are making the call.  You need to make sure that the callable situations are really applicable to the kind of hand you are currently playing in.

You need to remember that calling is not an average response between raising and folding,
rather it is a kind of tactical play, just next to checking.  So, if you are aware of places where you should be really calling you are going to realize that calling really makes sense.

But mathematical estimates about the benefits of calling never get along with probabilities in many situations.  With experience you are likely to realize when to actually call for each poker variant you tend to play.
